"The tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil," said James. Mortals know this, but do little or nothing about it. Homes are broken up; friendships shattered; millions made sick of heart; lives filled with bitterness and gall, and the course of human history swayed by the poisoned tongue. Men cannot tame it; God can!
Christian Science reveals what will rule the unruly member—God's constant and absolute control of man, his every thought and word. Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" that "Mind's control over the universe, including man, is no longer an open question, but is demonstrable Science" (p. 171). Each of us can so realize his conscious unity with God, universal Mind, that no word can he speak save what expresses the Love that is God. We can understand, with Amos, that God "declareth unto man what is his thought." The tongue is the servant of thought. When godless thinking stops, loveless words cannot be spoken.
Several families were moving from a block of city houses at the same time. One family began by first moving out its kitchen furniture. Another moved first its living room pieces. Another first carried out its bedroom furniture, and still another its dining room suite. All were on the move, but no two were moving in the same order. There was no criticism, faultfinding or complaining by anyone because the others were not moving in just the way he was doing. All were content to let the others do their moving in the way that appeared best to them. The incident teaches a helpful lesson, a lesson we all need to learn and relearn; namely, to mind our own business, and to refrain from mental or audible criticism of our brother because he is not making his moves in the same way we have chosen to make ours.
