THE CHURCH MILITANT AND THE CHURCH TRIUMPHANT

From the May 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The church militant is to be regarded from the human standpoint and the church triumphant from that of the absolute or real.

The church militant is represented by the Christian Science organization with all its activities, designed to destroy sin, disease, and death and liberate humanity from its heavy load of materiality.

To say that our church has no problems to solve would not be facing facts. There is a prevalent mesmeric tendency to ignore and consequently to tolerate evil, and not enough of the clear, steadfast vision which sees that evil is unreal because of the omnipotence of God. We may well ask ourselves, Are we doing all that we should be doing? We have the privilege of doing the healing work which will fill our churches with seekers for the truth. Should we merely talk of love we may become, as Paul said in the beloved thirteenth chapter of I Corinthians, "as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal." We should not rely on words alone; we must have works.
