When a girl of fifteen, I witnessed the healing of a close and dear friend of what was termed chronic neuritis. I later learned that the healing had taken place while the sufferer was reading "Unity of Good" by Mary Baker Eddy. This made a deep impression upon me and I purchased a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, read the Lesson-Sermons outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly, and occasionally attended services in a local branch church.
I could not have understood what I read and heard, for I stopped reading and attending the Christian Science services for several years. However, the seed of Truth sown at that time later bore fruit, for, after sincere prayer to God to help me out of great mental distress and darkness, I was again led to open Science and Health. This time the pages were illumined and I believed and understood what I read. I felt that I was reading the book for the first time. I shall always remember the wonderful feeling of hope which came to me as I read the opening words of the Preface (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings."
During the second evening of my reading, my thought became so filled with the clear understanding that true sight is spiritual perception and discernment, not dependent upon material organs, that I realized I no longer needed to wear glasses, and I wonderingly and gratefully removed them. Whereas I had formerly been subject to headache and eyestrain, I was immediately and completely free. This healing took place nearly twelve years ago, and I rejoice in this proof that God heals now as in Jesus' time—by spiritual means alone.
