COMING TO ONESELF

From the November 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the parable of the prodigal son, given in the fifteenth chapter of Luke's Gospel, are these significant words: "When he came to himself." We frequently hear the thought expressed. "I am not feeling like myself today." In this expression, though possibly we do not realize it, lies the implication that there is a false sense of self which is not in accord with our true selfhood, and that we need to come to ourselves, just as the prodigal son did. In other words, we need to gain an understanding of our true selfhood.

What is this true selfhood, and how can we become conscious of it? Christian Science gives us the answer. The chapter "Atonement and Eucharist" in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, points out the profound significance of the mission and sacrifice of Christ Jesus. Because of her clear spiritual vision, born of the deep purity of her character, our Leader perceived the great truth in the Master's words and works and was able to interpret them in their full significance.

Prayerful study of this chapter enables us to apprehend the footsteps taken by Jesus, which led to his full and final proof of his true selfhood and his overcoming of every belief of life in matter. With discernment and clarity Mrs. Eddy has shown us that the way our Master trod is the only road by which we can travel in solving any problem that may present itself to us. Christian religions have also taught that Jesus pointed the way, but their teachings have not been followed by perception and instruction as to how we can obey and follow the Master's example.
