BE YE FOLLOWERS OF LIGHT

From the September 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mankind has always been greatly interested in its leaders, in the qualities and characteristics that make for leadership. Much time and many words have been spent discussing this topic. But the great leaders of the world have been few and the followers many, so may it not be profitable to give some thought to the art of following? What makes a wise and faithful follower? First and foremost, discernment, an alert, intelligent judgment that distinguishes between Principle and persons. This means a careful analyzing of the doctrines or policies set forth by the would-be leader so they may be clearly seen apart from any personal charm, appeal of oratory, or specious reasoning that might tempt one to follow a person. This saves from following blindly one whose leadership may draw one on to subversive policies and destructive ends.

The next requirement is obedience. One cannot be said to be an obedient follower unless he subscribes to and demonstrates the doctrine set forth. He cannot be a far-off follower, in agreement with and admiring a leader, but not emulating his words and works. One must understand, adopt, and demonstrate the doctrine set forth so that he becomes its full representative.

Christ Jesus is recognized by Christendom as the Way-shower, who has promised the light of Life to his followers. He said, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." As we study the doctrine of Jesus and his works, which demonstrated its truth, we find indeed a Principle to follow with intelligent obedience and gladness of heart. We cease following what Peter has called "cunningly devised fables," and follow in the way of spiritual facts. We turn from the enticements and illusions of the senses to the assurance and substance of Truth, the power of Mind. We learn to know the one omnipotent God, enforcing His own law of Love, and realize our true individuality as the expressed activity of that law, unfolding eternal life. On page 31 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy says, "It is the living Christ, the practical Truth, which makes Jesus 'the resurrection and the life' to all who follow him in deed."
