In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 249) we read: "God never slumbers, and His likeness never dreams. Mortals are the Adam dreamers." In this and other statements, Mary Baker Eddy clearly points out that so-called mortal or human existence, in either its sleeping or its waking state, is a dream, an illusion. Every dream implies a dreamer who appears either to be witnessing to or taking part in an experience which includes one or more material persons, places, and things. The dreamer of every waking or sleeping dream is the false suppositional consciousness which our Leader names "mortal mind."
Every material condition, object, or thought is a lying dream which hints a spiritual fact. It is the nature of mortal mind to misconceive reality, and this misconception is the waking or sleeping dream of material sense. Disease is a dream or false belief, the lying opposite of spiritual perfection; fear and hatred are mortal dreams, misconceptions which contradict ever-present Love; lack is a dream or misbelief concerning true substance and abundance; and death is a false concept or dream which denies eternal and immortal Life.
In Science and Health (p. 14) we read: "Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man's dominion over the whole earth. This understanding casts out error and heals the sick, and with it you can speak 'as one having authority.'" In this passage our Leader establishes clearly the line of demarcation between the real man and real universe of God's creation and the Adam-dream, or false creation, of so-called mortal mind.
