THE LIGHT SHINES ON

From the December 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"The light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." So spake St. John in his heralding of the promised Messiah, Christ Jesus. This passage has also been translated in slightly differing forms. One translation reads, "The light is still shining in the darkness, for the darkness has never put it out." Another is, "Amid the darkness the Light shone, but the darkness did not master it."

Webster defines "comprehend" in part as "take into the mind." Thus it may be authoritatively stated that in spite of what seems to the human view to be dense darkness, chaos, and even death, such darkness cannot put out or overpower the light of Truth, or the Christ, which imparts spiritual understanding. Darkness cannot understand or comprehend light and has no power over it. A person has no power to utilize a given knowledge or rule which he does not understand. But, conversely, the light of spiritual illumination does comprehend or understand itself, and because of this the darkness of ignorance cannot actually exist. "The divine Principle, or Spirit, comprehends and expresses all, and all must therefore be as perfect as the divine Principle is perfect," is the way Mary Baker Eddy states this truth on page 518 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Since all being originates and abides in divine Spirit, Mind, this Mind conceives and understands all life to be divine and all existence to be spiritually illumined.

It was cause for great rejoicing when the so-called blackout was lifted from those parts of the world which, during the late war, were in continual danger. During the blackout it was assuring to realize that although the material illumination was taken away, still the light of Truth was not and could not be dimmed.
