With gratitude and in the hope that it will prove of benefit to some sincere seeker for Truth, I submit this testimony of healing. Eleven years ago, confronted with a problem of lack and unemployment, I turned to Christian Science. It was not easy, because I had been very critical of what I thought this religion was. I went to a practitioner for help and at the same time told him that I was a confirmed cigarette smoker and had been for many years, although I had often tried to give up the habit, and I asked him to include work for my freedom from this habit in his treatment. He agreed, pointing out to me that, as Mrs. Eddy teaches in Science and Health, false appetites bring no real pleasure. He asked simply that I refrain from smoking for the next few days while under his treatment. This I agreed to do.
Before I had even left the building, and many times that day and the next, I found myself reaching in my pockets for a cigarette, but, remembering my agreement, I did not smoke. After the third day, no longer bound by the agreement, I found myself healed. I had not the slightest taste or desire for cigarettes or tobacco in any form, and this healing has been permanent. It strengthened my purpose to study Christian Science and led to active membership in a branch church. At the time I hardly understood how I was healed. Now I know that like Naaman, the leper, who was healed by his obedience to the behest of Elisha, so I, by being obedient, was healed.
The problems of unemployment and lack were overcome at the same time.
