I had a wonderful healing in Christian Science about twenty-three years ago. My aroused interest in this teaching led me to read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. After I had read for about a week, the desire for tobacco left me. This came as a surprise, for it seemed that I had done nothing toward that end, although I had tried for years to discontinue the use of tobacco to no avail.
After studying for about six years I had another outstanding healing, but this time my understanding was sufficient to recognize what took place. During the First World War, I had twice been rejected as having chronic tuberculosis. For a period of years this condition did not bother me, but the time came when it appeared to be developing. At this stage I became very despondent. Any exercise seemed to aggravate the trouble, and I had no further object in living, since I could not participate in activities as other people did. My continuous trend of thinking was that I was hopeless and useless.
I asked for Christian Science treatment from the teacher with whom I had had class instruction. For some time there was no apparent physical improvement; however, I did recognize a definite change in my thinking. I became happy and hopeful and felt that I had a place and purpose in life. My body ceased to worry me. It was as though I had moved out of it. I seemed to live in a different state of existence, which was entirely mental. It was not long after this that the body began to reflect my changed thought. It began to fill out and become normal. There was such a marked physical change that some of my friends did not recognize me. After this healing took place, I saw clearly what our Leader has conveyed in her statement (Science and Health, p. 369), "In proportion as matter loses to human sense all entity as man, in that proportion does man become its master." The healing has been permanent, and today I enjoy good health.
