My first contact with Christian Science came through a conversation with a student of this Science when I was on a vacation. During the conversation she repeated the twenty-third Psalm as given in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 578), and in answer to a question she said, "We think of Jesus as the Way-shower." Years later when I could no longer accept the theology of my church, the thought of the Way-shower came back to me as I prayed for enlightenment. Very shortly a copy of Science and Health was lent to me.
As I began to read the chapter on Prayer, I knew at once that this was what I really believed and had longed for. Mrs. Eddy writes on page 2: "God is Love. Can we ask Him to be more? God is intelligence. Can we inform the infinite Mind of anything He does not already comprehend?" adding, "Shall we plead for more at the open fount, which is pouring forth more than we accept?" Gratitude and love flooded my consciousness.
False beliefs were joyously relinquished and many demonstrations were made. Chronic tonsillitis was healed, and displaced vertebrae and displaced bones in the foot were corrected with no specific work being done. A condition diagnosed as goiter by two physicians was healed after I made one visit to a practitioner's office. Shortly after this I was privileged to join The Mother Church.
