BLESSINGS FROM THE LESSON-SERMON

From the November 1949 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly contain the truths needed to solve human problems. Some years ago a Christian Science practitioner called this fact to the attention of a student, who has found that daily study of the Lesson never is without a reward. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (pp. 113, 114): "The systematized centres of Christian Science are life-giving fountains of truth. Our churches, The Christian Science Journal, and the Christian Science Quarterly, are prolific sources of spiritual power whose intellectual, moral, and spiritual animus is felt throughout the land. Our Publishing Society, and our Sunday Lessons, are of inestimable value to all seekers after Truth."

God is forever manifesting Himself, and this manifestation appears to mankind as ways and means of gaining a true knowledge of Him. It has come throughout human history in revelations to individuals who have been spiritually prepared to receive them, later appearing more generally in human consciousness through teachings, writings, and other agencies. Mrs. Eddy received the final revelation of Truth and founded the Christian Science movement with all its activities so that her revelation might be available to everyone in its purity. Our church services, publications, lectures, and the Lessons themselves are the means for accomplishing her purpose.

In founding her movement, Mrs. Eddy took no step until she was sure that God was leading her, and the idea of substituting Lesson-Sermons for sermons by individuals came to her only after prayer and waiting on God. She says (ibid., pp. 313, 314): "Humbly, and, as I believe, divinely directed, I hereby ordain the Bible, and 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,' to be hereafter the only pastor of The Church of Christ, Scientist, throughout our land and in other lands." The idea of the Lesson-Sermons came as inspiration to Mrs. Eddy as surely as the Ten Commandments came as inspiration to Moses and the Sermon on the Mount to Christ Jesus.
