My introduction to Christian Science came when a neighbor, who had been transformed by this law of God, said to me, "Divine Love governs," and I was instantaneously healed of a cold.
Later, after an unsuccessful operation in my throat, a well-known nose and throat specialist said he would operate again because the growth had returned; but he would not promise that the condition would not reappear. On my way home from school I stopped to see a woman who was just beginning the study of Christian Science and asked her to help me. She gave me absent treatment, and a few days later my mother exclaimed, "You are healed!" This was proved by the fact that my voice had lost its thickness. I began to sing and later was invited to become soloist for our church, which position I held for four years.
While serving I had laryngitis, and as there was no substitute, I felt that I should be in my place on Sunday. Each time I was afraid, Mary Baker Eddy's words came to me from her Message to The Mother Church for 1901 (p. 1): "And rest assured you can never lack God's outstretched arm so long as you are in His service." On Sunday morning I was unable to sing. During the second hymn I could not utter a sound above a whisper. However, I had the firm conviction that God was taking care of this service, and when the time came for the solo, my voice rang out clear and strong. It was as though I were standing back a distance and heard the voice entirely apart from me. My heart sang as I heard the message rise triumphant. Was it any wonder that members of the congregation said they had never heard me sing as I did that morning? I knew it was God's answer to prayer. I have never had laryngitis since.
