Mrs. Eddy says on page 571 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil." Many years ago I spent a week's vacation in quiet surroundings, giving most of my time to the earnest study of the Bible and Science and Health. From it I gained a clearer idea of God and of man's relationship to Him than I had ever had before.
On my return home one morning a disturbance outside took me to the door. A neighbor was carrying my little son to me, and he seemed to be unconscious. My only thought was of joy and gratitude for the realization that God's child is spiritual and perfect. The mental effort was no greater than that used in adding two and two, for just so I felt the truth of God's spiritual creation. In the few remaining steps before they reached me, the child roused and called to me. I discovered that the children had been playing in a yard where there were a number of beehives. An older boy had thrust a stick into a hive, overturned it, and my child had been the victim of the angry bees.
Wherever his clothes did not cover him, he had been stung—legs, arms, hands, face, even in his hair. We talked of God's great love and care for His children and of our love for the boy who had disturbed the bees and who, because he did not yet know the truth of God, had been a channel for error. There was not a blemish on my son from the experience, no word of pain, no tear, and he was out playing in a short time.
