GOOD CITIZENSHIP

From the October 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science has revealed the spiritual facts of being, namely the truth concerning God and His Christ. On the authority of the Scriptures, Science has brought to light the spiritual origin and development of the universe, including man, and it demands proof of this revelation through spiritualized living and wholesome and healthy conduct on the part of Christian Scientists.

Among the many human activities with which we are usually associated is that of our civic responsibilities towards those among whom we live. A good citizen commands the respect of his fellow citizens. He is aware of his civic responsibilities and faithfully observes the Golden Rule in his attitude towards others. He condemns dishonest} and graft and supports righteous government.

It is as important to be a good citizen as it is to be a good husband or a faithful friend. Men and women who are Christian Scientists do not take their citizenship lightly or ignore their civic responsibilities. They realize that there are obligations to be met and dangers to be averted. Mary Baker Eddy writes in her Message to The Mother Church for 1900(p. 10), "Certain elements in human nature would undermine the civic, social, and religious rights and laws of nations and peoples, striking at liberty, human rights, and self-government —and this, too, in the name of God, justice, and humanity!'
