SCIENTIFIC THINKING AND CHRISTLINESS DESTROY ALL ERROR

From the October 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Jesus of Nazareth was the most scientific thinker the world has ever known, and his consciousness was filled with Christliness. Starting from Principle, guided by divine intelligence, he was always logical in his thinking. Though confronted by ecclesiastical teaching and human opinions, he never allowed so-called mortal mind to direct his thoughts; he never swerved from divine Science. True idealism, logic, and right reasoning characterized the Master's thinking. He understood God to be the only Mind, and God to be the Mind of man. This clear comprehension gave him full faith in God and perfect trust in Love; it enabled him to destroy all error and demonstrate the truth of being.

When the Master went up into a mountain to teach, he was able to speak with authority because everything he taught was divinely logical, and therefore demonstrable. His words (Matt. 5:17), "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil," show that he recognized that the divine requirements in the law of Moses must be fulfilled, and can be fulfilled, through grace and Truth. Perhaps the words of Jesus (verse 18), "Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled," may today be applied to Christian Science in the sense that not one statement of Truth shall pass from the law of God till all that Science teaches shall be fulfilled through scientific thinking and Christliness.

The doctrine which taught (verse 38), "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth." the Master rebuked. He instructed his disciples not to fight error with error, but when wronged, to think clearly and to act in accord with the Christ-spirit; to go a second mile; to turn the other cheek; to love and continue to love, never fearing that another might retaliate. We shall never prove that we are children of our Father in heaven unless under all circumstances we love. It is not difficult to love Love's reflection, and there is in reality no other man. The Master's teaching was founded on Love, and Christian Science is the religion of divine Love. To be followers of the Master and of Mary Baker Eddy we must love.
