THE WORD MUST BE SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED

From the October 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Only as so-called mortal or carnal mind is put off can God, who is Life, Truth, and Love, be comprehended in Christian Science. As St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians(I Cor. 2:14), "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

The right approach to the study of Christian Science is not scholastic but inspirational. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, makes this clear in "Miscellaneous Writings" where she says (p. 127): "When a hungry heart petitions the divine Father-mother God for bread, it is not given a stone,—but more grace, obedience, and love. If this heart, humble and trustful, faithfully asks divine Love to feed it with the bread of heaven, health, holiness, it will be conformed to a fitness to receive the answer to its desire; then will flow into it the 'river of His pleasure,' the tributary of divine Love, and great growth in Christian Science will follow,—even that joy which finds one's own in another's good."

For true enlightenment it is not sufficient merely to read the words of the Scriptures and our Leader's writings. What came through inspiration needs inspiration and childlike receptivity to be understood. These sacred writings are in the new tongue of Spirit and are addressed not to the carnal mind, but to our individual intuitive sense, which alone hears the voice of Truth, our Father-Mother God. This new-born understanding is conscious of ideas. It is meek and lowly of heart, yet it is destined to supersede "the whole dark pile of human mockeries," because this understanding reveals man's true selfhood in the likeness of God. Intuitive sense rejects the dead letter of a literal interpretation.
