ADEQUATE DEFENSE

From the August 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science makes it plain that the entire ministry of Christ Jesus is a challenge to all of his followers to strive to overcome all worldliness and evil. Does this overcoming seem an impossible task? Does the yearning for the things of the flesh appear to be unquenchable? Is the belief in the reality of substance matter too persistent for easy relinquishment? Take courage and give thanks, for we have the reassuring words of the Master (John 16: 33): "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

An erroneous belief corrected by Truth in Jesus' way, a seeming discord destroyed through the realization of the reality of harmony, a disease healed through the power of spiritual understanding—all bear witness to the fact that the world and the things that are in the world can be overcome. Therefore every experience, seem it ever so difficult, may be made an occasion for rejoicing since it affords the opportunity to reflect Love more fully, to have greater faith, and to overcome error.

Clouds have a way of dispersing before the warmth of the sunlight; so if we would be rid of the clouds of doubt and the darkness of fear, we must keep our mental homes alight with spiritual love and divine inspiration that they may diffuse the warm glow of Truth, which dispels the darkness of error and sin. "Let your light reflect Light," our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, admonishes us onpage 154 of "Miscellaneous Writings." In the same paragraph she says: "Pray without ceasing. Watch diligently; never desert the post of spiritual observation and self-examination." So, no matter how sorely tempted we may be to recognize the material seeming, let us not yield one iota of our post, but hold fast to our understanding of Spirit, from which all things real are reckoned.
