"The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 574). I should like to give gratitude that all sense of two experiences as "wrathful and afflictive" has disappeared before the glorious consciousness of angels "entertained unawares."
The first of these afflictive circumstances brought me into the study of Christian Science during the depression year of 1933. Due to a retrenchment program my position as a public schoolteacher, which I had considered of lifetime tenure, was terminated with very short notice. My husband also found himself unemployed. A kind friend, much concerned about my state of mind, took me to see a woman who, she said, could help me get hold of myself. This woman was a consecrated worker in Christian Science. Then and there began my journey from sense to Soul.
After a time my husband and I were led to return to Chicago, Illinois, where we had previously lived. Here began the proving of the statement made in Joel (2:25), "I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten." Gainful employment was found for my husband, and a lovely apartment was obtained at a time of housing shortage. My work for a Bachelor of Science degree was completed in a very short time, and I was accepted for work in the public school system. Afterward means were afforded to invest in a permanent home with good income possibilities that would give my husband more opportunity to study Christian Science and to attend services at a Church of Christ, Scientist.
