AWAKENING WITHIN

From the December 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The stir of peoples everywhere is proof that the Christ, God's perfect idea, is awakening the world to the great issues of Christ's province—the kingdom of heaven. Justice and freedom are being recognized widely as everyone's right. Evil minds may seem to distort and pervert this right; human will may attempt to take the kingdom by force. But such errors will be corrected by the resistless, healing power of the appearing Christ, and eventually God's realm will be understood as the only dwelling place of man.

The Scriptures set forth the basic problem of mankind as well as the solution. By means of allegorical figures, the Bible teaches that mortal experience is a deep mesmeric sleep—the Adam-dream, in which substance appears to be matter, life seems to exist in matter, and the death of matter is the inevitable outcome of this false existence. Christian Science makes it clear that the awakening of individuals from the mortal dream to real life in God's kingdom will eventually solve the problems of the world.

Science interprets the life of Christ Jesus as the perfect example of the way in which this awakening is accomplished. The Master destroyed false consciousness by demonstrating the Christ-consciousness as his true selfhood, his individual being. In the ascension the fleshly form in which he had temporarily appeared to mankind vanished. Eventually, everyone must yield to Christ's awakening power as Jesus did and become conscious of his own true individuality, which is God's spiritual, deathless, incorporeal image.
