"COME YE"

From the December 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price" (Isa. 55:1). This God inspired message was voiced by the prophet Isaiah about twenty-five hundred years ago and brings its holy pronouncement to hungering mankind today. The invitation, "come ye," unceasingly rings out to "every one that thirsteth." It is Love's assurance of inexhaustible provision.

This promised substance is priceless. It is freely offered to all who desire the wine of inspiration and the sincere milk of God's Word. We learn in Christian Science that thirsting for the knowledge of God, Truth, is requisite, but not sufficient of itself. "Come ye" is an awakening stimulus which calls for undelayed, joyous action. It indicates the urge and necessity for progressive steps. Readiness to advance in the spiritual understanding of God's realm of unlimited abundance and effulgence enables us to partake of living waters.

On the other hand, to hunger and thirst after fleeting pleasures is to listen to mortal mind's counterfeit invitation. Even temporary means may be likened to unsatisfying waters, such as those drawn by the Samaritan woman to whom Christ Jesus said (John 4:13, 14), "Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life."
