In 1948 my husband and I had the great joy of acquiring a small farm of our own after we had worked on a farm several years for somebody else. But suddenly this joy was turned into sorrow, for after persistent coughing on my part an X-ray picture was taken, which showed a large cavity in one of my lungs. I was taken to a hospital and in accordance with the law of our country regarding tuberculosis, I had to be separated from our five-year-old boy because of the danger of contagion. He was not allowed to visit me, and I suffered very much from homesickness.
When a dear cousin visited me about six weeks later, she found me very ill and depressed. I had the feeling that God could not hear my prayers at all; therefore I was without hope. My cousin told me of Christian Science and offered to ask a practitioner to help me at once. I told her I could accept this help onlv if in so doing I would not in any way be trespassing against God. When I had gathered enough courage to read the copies of The Herald of Christian Science (German Edition) which my cousin had left me, I found to my great surprise and joy that Christian Science heals as Jesus did.
Shortly after the practitioner had started to work for me the homesickness yielded. I was able to eat again, and I began to join in a little of the conversation of my roommates, which I had not been able to do in all the weeks I had been there. When the practitioner first visited me I felt so much love and encouragement that I told her I wished she could stay with me. She explained to me that divine Love is ever present, and she asked my cousin to bring me the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
