THE LESSER IDEAS OF GOD

From the August 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

From the moment one begins the study of Christian Science it is his privilege to prove the truths taught in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. That our Leader was divinely inspired in her discovery of Christian Science cannot be doubted by anyone who has proved in his own experience the truth of a single proposition of this scientific religion. On page 518 of the textbook we read, "God gives the lesser idea of Himself for a link to the greater, and in return, the higher always protects the lower."

In the first chapter of Genesis we find the true account of creation. Here we are told that the universe, including everything expressing life, is the product of God. And man, the highest idea, is given dominion over all the lesser ideas. This creation is pronounced good by the creator. In the second chapter of Genesis we find another account; but in this creation man and the lesser creatures are said to be made from the dust of the ground. As we understand the true creation, we begin to demonstrate improved conditions not only for ourselves but for all the lesser ideas of divine Mind.

Before beginning the earnest study of Christian Science I had no real affection for animals and a very poor opinion of their intelligence; I saw them as material creatures, a part of a mortal, material creation. On becoming a rancher's wife, I found that animals were a necessary part of my life, and I shall always be grateful for the lessons learned from them. There were the cattle, which I then considered unbelievably stupid, and the chickens, which were my special care. There were dogs, cats, predatory animals, and even snakes. My gratitude for Christian Science, which altered both my preconceived opinions and my attitude toward these creatures, is unlimited. I have, through my study, learned to see them all, not as material animals, but as spiritual ideas of the one Mind.
