I want to express my gratitude to God for Christian Science and for the many blessings that I have received since I became a student of it. I have been healed of headaches, colds, and biliousness, as well as of the smoking habit. When Christian Science was first presented to me I did not see how discordant conditions could be healed by just reading and studying the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but I have indeed had many proofs that they can.
One experience which stands out is a healing of acute appendicitis. While I was quite a young student of Christian Science, my mother and I were visiting in a city on the West Coast. One day I was suddenly seized with severe pains in my abdomen. My mother, who was not interested in Christian Science, became very fearful and insisted that a physician examine me. I reluctantly submitted, and the physician told me that I would have to be moved to a hospital immediately and be operated on in the morning. This occurred at midnight. Before I was taken to the hospital, I asked one of the neighbors to contact a friend in New York City, a student of Christian Science who has since become my husband, to work for me in Christian Science. During the next few hours I applied the truth as much as I was able to and asked God to help me.
I kept knowing that God was with me. Our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, tells us on page 166 of Science and Health, "Instead of thrusting Him aside in times of bodily trouble, and waiting for the hour of strength in which to acknowledge Him, we should learn that He can do all things for us in sickness as in health." I had read this passage several times before, but I realized that here was an opportunity for me to apply it. The Bible declares (Ps. 46:1), "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." I wanted very much to prove that the power of Truth does heal.
