"LOVE IS THE FULFILLING OF THE LAW"

From the February 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When Christ Jesus gave the two great commandments (Matt. 22:37, 39), "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind," and, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself," he declared, "On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." The Apostle Paul in his epistle to the Romans said (8:2), "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." And he further explained that "love is the fulfilling of the law" (Rom. 13:10).

Since "love is the fulfilling of the law" which frees us from sin and death, it is necessary for us to express this love, which is derived from God. As we begin to comprehend and feel in our heart that God is Love, that He is All-in-all, and that man is the evidence of this divine efficacious Love, we shall be loving, understanding, tender, and kind. If we are alert to see error's nothingness and to see man as God made him, we shall do less judging and condemning of our brother. To separate error from our thought of man enables us to keep the two great commandments Jesus gave to us.

When I, as a Christian Scientist, clearly understand that God is the only Mind, my Mind, and that Mind is infinite Love, eternal and universal in its scope, I know that infinite Love cannot see war, accident, destruction, want, and woe; Love can see nothing but its own infinite expression.
