PROGRESS THROUGH CHURCH MEMBERSHIP

From the February 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Progress in our church work must always be founded on spirituality, for the basis of all church activity is spiritual. The real Church must be erected in the heart and the understanding. In this connection Christian Scientists find Mary Baker Eddy's definition of "Church" in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" indispensable. It reads (p. 583):

"The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle.

"The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick."
