Moses stood on the top of a hill near Rephidim, holding in his hands the rod of God. Aaron and Hur were with him. In the plain below, Joshua set the Israelites in array to do battle with the Amalekites. When Moses held the rod of God aloft, Joshua's army prevailed against the host of Amalek; but when Moses lowered his hand the Amalekites prevailed. Then Aaron and Hur caused Moses to sit upon a rock; and with one on either side, they held up his hands so that they were steady till sunset. As a result Israel won the battle against Amalek.
This narrative, found in the seventeenth chapter of Exodus, has profound significance for all Christian Scientists. We have followed our own great Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, up the hill of Christian Science. Now it is our duty and privilege to uphold her demonstration completely till the battle with materialism shall end in glorious victory for the Christ, Truth, as presented in this age by Christian Science.
Mrs. Eddy made it clear that she was both Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Her founding of the Church of Christ, Scientist, is as divinely inspired as the discovery which this organization protects. "The discovery and founding of Christian Science," she says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 382), "has cost more than thirty years of unremitting toil and unrest; but, comparing those with the joy of knowing that the sinner and the sick are helped thereby, that time and eternity bear witness to this gift of God to the race, I am the debtor."
