THE VITALITY OF SPIRITUAL IDEAS

From the September 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science reveals a wealth of spiritual ideas, and students of this Science do well to consider the infinite vitality of every idea that springs from God, divine Mind. A cursory statement of spiritual ideas does not demonstrate the vitality inherent in them. But an understanding use of the thoughts which come from Mind can rouse the world, force it to give up ignorant beliefs, and bring about a God-ordered society.

At the direction of God, Moses took off his shoes when he stood before the burning bush of divine revelation and gained for mankind the true idea of God. In reverence he let the meaning of the unfoldment of the idea of God as the I AM, incorporeal Mind, possess him. As the power of this unfoldment increased to Moses' understanding, he became the agency by which law, justice, truth, and reality were advanced to human thought and man's existence as the witness to God, divine Life, began to appear. Mary Baker Eddy says in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 139), "Justice, honesty, cannot be abjured; their vitality involves Life,—calm, irresistible, eternal."

Christ Jesus knew the vitality of spiritual ideas and the qualities which characterize them, for he said (John 6:63), "The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." Every truth he uttered was vitalized by the understanding of it which he possessed. No truth was thought or spoken superficially by the Master or without full realization of its power to act beneficially upon human consciousness. Consequently he could heal individuals or multitudes with unlabored might, and he could raise the dead to life.
