When I was in about the fourth grade I had difficulty with arithmetic and, being a shy child, was much embarrassed at the blackboard. I attended a Protestant Sunday School at the time, and one night when saying my prayers I promised God that if He would send an angel to stand by me at the blackboard the next day to tell me how to work out the problem, I would believe in Him.
The next day I was puzzled because, although there was no angel with wings standing beside me at the blackboard, I was able to work out the problem easily. My conception of angels was obviously erroneous, but I decided I would believe in God anyway. Later, after my family took up the study of Christian Science, I learned in the Sunday School what angels really are, and I understood that an angel thought had come to me that day. On page 306 of "Miscellaneous Writings," Mrs. Eddy tells us: "When angels visit us, we do not hear the rustle of wings, nor feel the feathery touch of the breast of a dove; but we know their presence by the love they create in our hearts. Oh, may you feel this touch, —it is not the clasping of hands, nor a loved person present; it is more than this: it is a spiritual idea that lights your path!"
Christian Science opened up an entirely new world for me, and the joy and gladness it brought into my life can never be told. I attended the Sunday School until I was twenty and immediately thereafter started teaching in it myself.
