Testimonies of Healing

From the December 1965 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is with great joy that I express my thanks for Christian Science, revealed to us by our dear Leader, for through her writings she has taught me how to think spiritually.

Before I had commenced the study of Christian Science, a sister very dear to me had passed on. I had ceased attending an orthodox church and had become, as I thought, an atheist, for I wished to have nothing to do with a God so cruel as to afflict my sister and deprive me of her company.

When I was conversing with a friend one day, the two words "Christian Science" were mentioned. These struck a note in my consciousness; but when I inquired further of my friend regarding this religion, she said she knew nothing about it. For four years these two words were embedded in my thought. But the seed was sown, and the Christ was leading.

One day a person on our staff, who is now a dear friend, came to me and asked if I would care to attend a Church of Christ, Scientist, and investigate Christian Science with her. You can imagine my joy at having the opportunity at last to become conversant with this religion. However, I did not accept it immediately. I sized up the congregation, walked quietly behind and listened to students who impressed me by speaking naturally of God and Christian Science truths, read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and attended the services.

When the Lord's Prayer was being repeated by the congregation, I could not join in voicing the words, "Thy will be done in earth" (Matt. 6:10), because I did not agree with what I thought God's will to be. But later in my study, when I realized that God's will for man is good and that with the application of His law of good to our affairs we experience harmony, I was able to say in all earnestness, "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." Is it any wonder that I am grateful for Christian Science, which corrected this error and brought about this mental healing, giving me a great measure of peace and reassurance?

I have had physical healings too, one of which early in my study of Christian Science was very convincing. One Sunday I was to sing the solo in a branch church, but I was troubled with a bad cold, because of which I could scarcely speak.

The organist, who came to our home to practice the song, was a practitioner. No mention was made of the condition, but she detected the error and saw its nothingness. By the time she had played the introduction, I was free, and my voice was clear and normal. This was wonderful to me because at one minute I could scarcely speak, let alone sing, and at almost the next minute I was completely healed.

One night, when I was playing tennis, I heard a noise, and, at the same time, I felt as if I had been struck on the leg by a hard object. There was no pain, but when I attempted to run to change my position at the net, I could not do so because my leg was incapable of supporting me. I hopped to a seat at the side of the court, declaring that since man is made in the image and likeness of God, Spirit, he is spiritual and perfect and that nothing can change this fact.

I was driven home, and my husband and I held to the truth of perfect God and perfect man and prayerfully worked to know that a spiritual idea can never be broken. In the morning I was helped down the stairs and went to our place of business, managing to get through the day's work by clinging to man's immunity from error. In a short space of time I had perfect freedom of action. During this period I was able to perform my daily duties.

For the privilege and joy of service in a branch church, I am very grateful, for with the more earnest study I am doing, I am gaining more spiritual light, which enables me to do better work for our blessed Cause and for the world.—
