I should like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the Christian Science periodicals; they have been such a source of inspiration and encouragement to me. The gratitude expressed in the testimonies truly shows that this Science results not only in healings, but in a definite spiritual awakening.
I was led to turn to the wonderful truths of Christian Science about eleven years ago when the doctors were unable to help me. Several doctors were consulted, and extensive examinations were made. Finally the diagnosis of a physical and nervous breakdown, including nonparalytic poliomyelitis and infectious mononucleosis, with little hope of recovery, was made.
Not only had I been in bed about three months and unable to eat and care for my family, but I was steadily growing weaker. I prayed very earnestly to God to show me the way, as I felt it just was not right for Him to give my husband and me two precious little children and not provide me with the strength to take care of them.
While in my teens I had attended a Christian Science Sunday School for a very short time, and although I had since become a member of a church of another denomination, I had always had great respect for Christian Science and had felt the love extended by the Christian Scientists whom I had been associated with.
I was led to call a practitioner, and I asked if I might see and talk with him. Much to my family's amazement, I managed to dress, and my husband took me to see the practitioner. After hearing the wonderful truths of the relationship of God and man, I realized that I had truly been led by God to take this step. I knew without a doubt that this was the logical religion that I had been seeking, and at long last I had found the way. I went home to bed full of gratitude to God for Christian Science and slept peacefully all night. The next morning I got up, dressed, and had a large breakfast for the first time in months. Although I was able to take care of all the responsibilities of the family, which included packing and moving to another city, I did not experience a complete healing until about two years later. I had much self-pity, condemnation, and resentment to overcome. Through the help of dedicated practitioners and the daily study of the Lesson-Sermons, provided in the Christian Science Quarterly, my thought was gradually uplifted, and I learned to see myself and others as God's spiritual likeness. One day I realized that I had been completely free of all the physical difficulties for some time.
I cannot express enough gratitude for the consecrated practitioners who worked for me at different times and for my husband's love and his encouragement of my reliance on God. He was at that time a hospital administrator and had been for a number of years, and although he had been relying on the judgment of doctors, he recognized with me that we had indeed found the pearl of great price. We are both members of The Mother Church and a branch church and are grateful for opportunities to serve wherever we can.
It was such a joy and privilege to have class instruction. A few days after the class had ended, I noticed that the deep calluses that had covered the ball of my foot, and which had caused me a great deal of pain and discomfort, had completely vanished, and the skin was smooth. I am so grateful that our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has given her students who desire a higher understanding of God and man, the sacred privilege of having class instruction.
Our children have both been regular attendants at a Christian Science Sunday School since they were young, and it has been a glorious experience in time of need to turn as a family to God, our Father-Mother Love, who never fails us. I can truly say with the Psalmist (Ps. 23:5), "My cup runneth over," so bountiful are my blessings. With all the good that has come into my life, is it any wonder that I am so grateful for Christian Science!— Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts.
