Testimonies of Healing

Since my first testimony of healing was...

From the May 1965 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Since my first testimony of healing was printed in the Christian Science Sentinel, so much good has flowed into my experience through Christian Science that I feel I must write again in deep gratitude for the greater sense of health, harmony, and security that has come to me as the result of understanding in but a degree Mrs. Eddy's wonderful revelation given us in Science and Health. The truth in this book meets our varying needs, proving beyond a doubt that the promises of the Bible are fulfilled here and now.

Wanting to write of some of the blessings which I have received through the Christ Science, I scarcely know where to begin, so abundant has been the proof of God's omniactive law of good. I regained my lost sense of smell (I was completely without it for a year), and I have been healed of the effects of accidents, of internal strain, and of extreme fear and nervousness.

I have also experienced with a friend a wonderful instance of protection from fire. Her home, which I was sharing with her, was surrounded by a gorse fire, and onlookers declared it could in no way be saved from complete destruction.

I wish it were possible to write in detail of the way my friend and I were comforted and strengthened by our trust in God's omnipotence as we saw the flames surrounding the bungalow home! It would be too long a testimony, but suffice it to say that the fire stopped in a clear circle round the house without even touching the building; and though the windows had been open, no smuts had come in, and nothing was damaged by smoke.

Once an uncovered wooden coat hanger was inadvertently thrust sharply into my chest, causing great pain and a feeling of nausea. I declared aloud statements of truth that came to me; and suddenly above the turmoil of fear and pain, I recalled the Bible account of Moses and the burning bush, and I remembered that he had turned aside to see why the bush was not consumed.

Immediately a great calm came to me, and I heard myself saying, "That is what I have to do—turn aside to see why I can't be hurt or injured." Then I saw that God's spiritual idea cannot even be touched by mortal belief or law, and then all pain disappeared. I was so overwhelmed with relief and gratitude that I just wept, and not even a sense of sensitiveness or bruising was experienced.

Sometime ago while I was helping to push a car from the garage the open bonnet was forced down onto my hand. I hurried into the house and asked my friend for help in Christian Science. I went to my bedroom in great pain and declared as meaningfully as I could "the scientific statement of being." This is found on page 468 of Science and Health and part of it assures us that "Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error." About an hour and a half later I had recovered sufficiently to be out driving the car and about my ordinary business. Not many days later the swelling and bruises had disappeared.

The healing of the internal strain, which had incapacitated me for a few hours, occurred when I was lying on a chaise longue and asking God to give me the right message from Science and Health, which I had by me. I took up the book and it opened to page 253, where I read, "Do not believe in any supposed necessity for sin, disease, or death, knowing (as you ought to know) that God never requires obedience to a so-called material law, for no such law exists."

"How wonderful!" I thought. "There is no necessity for me to lie here to be waited on or to be handicapped in any way." And thanking God for this lovely healing truth, I stood up, and ten minutes afterwards I was out in the garden, weeding, and free from any sense of difficulty.

Not all my healings have been quick. For instance, it took me a long time to lose my fear and thus be healed of very frequent attacks of migraine. But I have always found that slow healings have forced me to gain more understanding of this holy, comforting, Christly message to all mankind, Christian Science.

For our dear Leader's life of self-sacrifice, through which she was able to give us the full meaning of the Master's teaching, healing works, and wondrous sacrifice, and for all the inspiring activities of The Mother Church, I am inexpressibly grateful.—
