"They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength" (Isa. 40:31). The truth of these words was proved in my experience.
Early in life, sorrow and trouble came to me because of a dear relative. Later on, I encountered hatred, envy, jealousy, ridicule, and the like. When this occurred, I would think: You cannot change anything; you must accept it because there are people who arouse such dislike, and you are one of them. I was a shy person and therefore accepted everything in silence. Inwardly, however, I was annoyed and distressed.
Although I read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and The Herald of Christian Science, I did not know how to meet all this evil. To be sure, I had read, but I had not studied; hence my work had been done only superficially. And since I was annoyed and distressed over the evil, it was nurtured in my thought and grew and prospered, until finally it was all made manifest on my body as sickness and pain. Because I was no longer able to work the entire day at my place of employment, I was obliged to produce a doctor's statement. The doctor diagnosed rheumatism and arthritis, and I had to undertake a course of mineral water baths. Still I was more or less in pain day and night. My hands and feet were swollen, and I needed nursing care.
