Getting to Know Yourself

From the November 1970 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Have you encountered the real you? If not, then you are missing much, for your real self is well worth knowing. What you really are is much more than the composite of physical characteristics you see in a mirror. Actually your real individuality is not material at all. It is too great and good for that. It is what the Bible calls the image and likeness of God, who is perfect, infinite Spirit. The book of Genesis tells us, "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him."Gen. 1:27;

Currently there is much discussion of mankind's quest for identity. The individual seems lost in the environment, overwhelmed by sheer numbers. People wonder why they are here and where they are going, failing to realize that each individual is everlastingly important, yes, essential, in God's perfect plan. All identities are unique, distinct expressions of the one eternal Ego, or divine Mind, and therefore of infinite value. You and I and all men live in the intelligent substance of this Mind and partake of its self-knowledge, wisdom, power, and love. Mrs. Eddy writes, "The divine Ego, or individuality, is reflected in all spiritual individuality from the infinitesimal to the infinite."Science and Health, p. 336;

Christ Jesus was speaking of his true self when he said to Philip, "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father."John 14:9; He knew that it was not the human person that perfectly portrayed the divine Ego, but the Christ, or true manhood, which is forever at one with the Father. The Christ was manifested to human sense in the Master's words and works. It was his mission to introduce others to the greatness and goodness of their real selves, to the infinite possibilities inherent in man's true identity.
