One proof of God's protection stands out among the rest in my grateful memory. I was on my way home from church after the morning service, when I felt something drop on my head. I was about to lift up my eyes, but the inner voice said, almost audibly, "Don't! Walk on." Seconds later the glass globe of a street lamp that a man had just broken while cleaning it fell in pieces on the pavement. Had I not been warned in time, all the broken glass would have fallen on my upturned face.
Another experience was an instantaneous healing. I was going to give a lecture. As the bus in which I traveled was nearing my stop, I stood, ready to get out. At that moment there was a terrific jerk, and I was thrown on my back, full length, down the middle of the bus. My head knocked against the floor, and I could only think, "Father, help me!" The girl conductor with her money bag fell on me very heavily, coins rolling in all directions. She was helped up at once, but no one attempted to lift me, as they thought I must suffer from concussion or be unconscious. I grasped someone's hand and got up, and, to the general surprise, I was unhurt.
As I walked to my lecture, I could only repeat Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health, p. 424), "Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection." That was sufficient to help me deliver my talk without notes and without lapse of memory. It was Wednesday, and I gave a testimony in church that evening.
