Only someone who has known the misery of being an alcoholic can understand the hopelessness I faced before Christian Science healed me, and how much Christian Science means to me following my complete healing of this degrading appetite.
I had volunteered and was already in the Army overseas before Pearl Harbor. Like many men in the service away from home, I spent my free time drinking and in bars. This way of life became increasingly worse after the war. I was in a good business, but because of drink I started losing customers and lost my driver's license.
With the little money I had left I started school under the GI bill. While in school, I drank very little and only on weekends. After getting out of school I got a good job but again started to drink heavily, and the firm let me go. I moved from job to job and city to city, always finding some excuse for drinking. The bars became my home.
