When I was introduced to Christian Science...

From the April 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I was introduced to Christian Science, a tremendous sense of burden, lack, discord, and frustration seemed to be consuming my life. I had always attended a Protestant church, taking part in the activities of the church and Sunday School. I lived the best life I knew how and tried to help everyone in any and every way I could. But as the minister preached each Sunday on what miserable sinners we all were, I became disenchanted with the church and stopped going entirely.

The words from (Matthew 6:33) "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" came to my thought again and again as I continued my search for God in the bookstores and library. I was comforted and sustained, but little else.

Then one day as I was going up the post office steps, I met a dear friend. As I think of it now, it was like an angel from God, for she brought the message of Christian Science to me. She had been out of town for some time, and I was glad to see her. She was radiant with the joy of living. Immediately I asked her what had happened to her, and she answered just one word, "God." I asked her to tell me more, for I could see that she had found what I was seeking. She told me about Christian Science and gave me some copies of the Christian Science Sentinel and The Christian Science Journal. Later a member of the local church gave me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. As I read, I was overjoyed, for I knew I had found the "pearl of great price" (Matt. 13:46).
