Testimonies of Healing

It is over fifty years ago that I first became...

From the July 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is over fifty years ago that I first became acquainted with Christian Science. Many times, when faced with a problem, I have had help and comfort from this paragraph found on page 280 in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy: "Rightly understood, instead of possessing a sentient material form, man has a sensationless body; and God, the Soul of man and of all existence, being perpetual in His own individuality, harmony, and immortality, imparts and perpetuates these qualities in man,— through Mind, not matter."

In my girlhood days we were taught to read the Bible. Since we were a large family, we read the Scriptures together every evening. I loved both the Old and New Testament Bible stories. The Psalms, especially Psalm 121, comforted me when as a bride I was leaving my home in England sixty years ago to come to Canada to make my home. Verse 8 reads: "The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore." Some years later, when I became interested in Christian Science, I gained a much larger concept of the Scriptures and of God through study of the Bible Lessons. My husband first presented Christian Science to me. When he did not return from the First World War, this Science was as a husband to me and a father to our family.

I would like to tell of an outstanding healing I had when my children were in their teens. One night, upon retiring, I suddenly became unconscious. My eldest daughter, who was with me, at once called a Christian Science practitioner who was also her Sunday School teacher. Prayerful treatment was started, and she gave my daughter the following statement to read from our textbook, Science and Health (p. 420): "There is no metastasis, no stoppage of harmonious action, no paralysis." When I became conscious, my four children were standing by my bedside, and my first thought was that of gratitude for Christian Science. This gratitude was accompanied by a great sense of vitality. I shall always be grateful for the immediacy of this healing; it was as if nothing had happened, and we retired for the night.
