The measure of an education in the various sciences of human knowledge is what one knows, while the test of one's education in technology, or applied science, is what he can do. In Christian Science one is educated in Science and applied Science, whether it be in Primary class teaching or in his daily study. Mrs. Eddy gives in her writings the Science, or true knowledge, of God, man, and the spiritual universe; and she also imparts the technology, that is, the method of applying divine Science in human experience. This education includes the unmasking of what may be termed the opposite mode of mental activity, which is malpractice or mesmerism. Mrs. Eddy states, "All mesmerism is of one of three kinds; namely, the ignorant, the fraudulent, or the malicious workings of error or mortal mind." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 51;
When the building of the extension of The Mother Church in Boston, Massachusetts, had just begun, it was rumored that all money needed to complete this structure had been paid in—a fabrication and form of malicious malpractice designed to halt the flow of funds. We read in an editorial written at this time that someone who heard this rumor "very promptly and emphatically pronounced the story a fabrication of the evil one, and he was entirely right in doing so." The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany by Mrs. Eddy, p. 14;
Mesmeric malpractice of good institutions and people is not new. In the Bible we read of Balaam being hired by Balak to curse the children of Israel, who were, however, protected from being cursed, to such an extent that Balaam "blessed them altogether." Num. 23:11; In divine Love, God, is found the protection for Christian Science, even as the children of Israel were protected. The practice of Christian Science conforms to the rule of Love, which blesses, and only blesses, man.
