Christian Science heals sickness by first destroying the mental disturbance that causes it. This Science shows us how to look away from physical symptoms and correct the real culprit, mortal mind, with spiritual Truth. The physical symptoms of disease are understood to be hypnotic pictures induced by fear, ignorance, or sin, and are rejected as no part of the real spiritual man made in the image and likeness of God, infinite Truth and Love.
Evil and its diseased conditions feed on attention. They seem to grow worse as mortal thought ruminates on their appearance and feeling, as it examines them with morbid curiosity. But Mrs. Eddy's words point thought in the right direction: "Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality. Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." Science and Health, p. 261;
The material body responds harmoniously as its basic mental nature is understood, and the human mind, which governs it, is brought more closely into line with God's character and purpose. Instead of focusing on the body and its discordant symptoms, we learn to fill thought with qualities that manifest the tenderness, purity, wisdom, and justice of divine Mind. We claim our unity with this Mind as its idea, or reflection, and reject every mental impression that would attract our thought toward matter and its spurious evidence. Mrs. Eddy writes: "Every human thought must turn instinctively to the divine Mind as its sole centre and intelligence. Until this be done, man will never be found harmonious and immortal."
