I have always been grateful to the aunt who presented Christian Science to our family when I was a young girl. A cherished memory is that of reading the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, from beginning to end when I was about fourteen years old. Through the years, though I have stumbled at times, I have never lost my faith in God's all-encompassing love or my complete reliance on His care.
While my five children were growing up, there were many instances of God's love, guidance, and protection. The effects of a fall from a high chair, resulting in unconsciousness, were quickly overcome. Coma, severe earache, deep cuts, high fever with accompanying paralysis—all of these false claims of intelligence and life in matter were healed through reliance on Christian Science alone. Experiencing physical safety in an auto accident, when the car was damaged beyond repair, was an awe-inspiring experience for one daughter; and there were other instances of the children's protection on horseback, motorcycles, and skis. For the unfailing response of the Christian Science practitioners who were called upon for treatment during those years, I am deeply grateful.
My own life has been almost totally free from physical problems, but one healing has remained a beacon to me over the years. Our fourth child was born well and perfect, as the previous three had been, with the prayerful help of a practitioner. However, in the hour following the birth of this son at a Christian Science nursing home, the nurse saw that I appeared to be in an extremely weakened condition. She advised the practitioner, who came immediately from a nearby city. We were then living in England, where the law required that a doctor must be called if complications arose following childbirth.
