In 1945, I was healed of asthma through Christian Science. I had contracted it while working surrounded with bauxite dust used in the making of aluminum.
When I left for the Army in 1939, I wasn't a Christian Scientist, but at that time I began to thank my mother, who was a Christian Scientist, for having acquainted me with this religion and giving me some appreciation of God as divine Love. The mobilization, with all the consequences of the hour, took me far away from my home. Being insufficiently instructed in Science to defend my health through spiritual understanding, I was more and more afflicted with this painful disease. The imprisonment that followed, the solitude, sometimes the boredom, caused me to go back to cigarettes. The smoking helped make the asthma chronic.
One day in 1943, I got hope and enlightenment from a book that the commandant of the prison camp put into my hands. It was Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy that the Christian Science Wartime Activities had sent me.
