From the March 1976 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Last county boundary guide

For a year the journal card directory has carried a one-page guide to towns affected by county boundary changes in England, Scotland, and Wales. (See page 3, immediately following these notices.) The guide was provided to familiarize Journal readers with the many changes and assist those wishing to locate Christian Science practitioners, nurses, and churches in Britain.

This month will be the last time the guide will appear. Thus individuals and Reading Rooms likely to use this page may want to keep a copy in their files.

To locate groups of Christian Scientists

Planning a vacation? Traveling to a remote locale? Moving? Perhaps you would like to know whether a group of Christian Scientists is active if there are no branch churches or societies where you're going.

Church members needing information to attend the services of a particular group may write:

The First Church of Christ, Scientist
Department of Branches and Practitioners
Christian Science Center
Boston, MA, U.S.A. 02115

The department keeps a complete and up-to-date list of groups of Christian Scientists, including those that hold services at vacation resorts. In your letter please pinpoint the location you are asking about. Just the name of a country is not sufficient.

You can help

A special fund—a special opportunity

Not long ago we opened the Fund for The Christian Science Monitor—a fund which gives new occasion to members and friends to express their love for the newspaper Mrs. Eddy founded.

By giving to this Fund, you can contribute directly to the Monitor's well-being during an important period of its growth. You can further the improvements in the paper's design and content and help it to attain a stronger financial position. In this way you can have a special part in its progress and fulfillment.

Often, when a special opportunity like helping the Monitor appears, the Treasurer makes it known by establishing such a special fund. Watch the funds being mentioned in the Treasurer's communications in the Journal, the Sentinel, and the Herald, and you'll know where your love and support are currently most needed.

Contributions may always be sent to:

Marc Engeler, Treasurer
The First Church of Christ, Scientist
Christian Science Center
Boston, MA, U.S.A. 02115

To learn more

The founder of this magazine, Mary Baker Eddy, is also the author of the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. This book contains the full statement of Christian Science. And it's translated into thirteen languages. You can purchase a copy at a nearby Christian Science Reading Room. It's available in English in an inexpensive paperback edition. Or you can usually borrow a copy from a local public library. If you wish you can order direct from Miss Frances C. Carlson, Publisher's Agent, One Norway Street, Boston, MA, U.S.A. 02115.

Chaplain Training Program

If you are a young man or woman who has just recently graduated from college or is about to, you may be looking for a way to serve your church while serving your country.

Have you considered becoming a Chaplain in the United States Army, Navy, or Air Force?

Perhaps you know of someone who may be interested in the Chaplain Training Program at The Mother Church. This program includes a rewarding experience at headquarters, seminars with church workers, and practical field experience in the healing work while taking graduate courses in religion and related fields at Boston University.

Applicants must be sincere Christian Scientists, active members of The Mother Church and a branch church or college organization, and have been accepted for Primary class instruction before enrollment.

For further information, write: The First
Church of Christ, Scientist, Christian
Science Activities for Armed Services
Personnel, Christian Science Center,
Boston, MA, U.S.A. 02115.

An invitation from the Editors

Perhaps you have an idea you would like to develop for use in the periodicals. Or a healing experience you would like to share. We would be happy to consider it.

Those who write articles and poems for the journal, Sentinel, and Herald—as well as shorter religious articles for The Home Forum page of the Monitor—must be members of The Mother Church. You need not be a member, however, to submit a testimony of healing in Christian Science. Testimonies are welcomed from members as well as from those who haven't yet joined The Mother Church.

Specific, detailed guidelines are contained in our pamphlet, Guide to Writing for the Periodicals. If you would like a copy, please write to:

The Christian Science Publishing Society
Journal, Sentinel, and Herald
Editorial Department
One Norway Street
Boston, MA, U.S.A. 02115

If your interest or talent is in writing poetry, you will find helpful pointers in the leaflet "Interested in Writing a Poem for the Periodicals?" Please request this leaflet specifically, as it isn't automatically included with Guide to Writing for the Periodicals.

All contributions accepted for publication become the sole property of The Christian Science Publishing Society.

Are you almost 12 years old?

... if you are, maybe this would be a good time to think about joining The Mother Church. When Jesus was 12, his parents found him in the temple eagerly talking with the learned men, "both hearing them, and asking them questions" (Luke 2:46).

Mary Baker Eddy knew that boys and girls of 12 could know and love Truth and want to join with others who are practicing it. So she provided in the Church Manual (Art. IV, Sect.3) the opportunity to join at age 12. If you would like to find out what it means to be a member of The Mother Church, why not study the Manual and perhaps ask your Sunday School teacher or a Christian Science practitioner about it? They can answer your questions and give you an application to fill out if you'd like one.

(If you're over 12, you may obtain an application form from any Christian Science Reading Room, branch church or society, or Christian Science practitioner listed in the directory at the back of this Journal. Or you may write directly to George W. Ledbetter, Clerk, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Christian Science Center, Boston, MA, U.S.A. 02115.)

For admission in June, applications should reach Boston by May 1; for admission in November, applications should be received in Boston by October 1.

Planning a trip to Boston?

You may wish to include visits to two of Mary Baker Eddy's former homes:

1908-1910 CHESTNUT HILL, MASSACHUSETTS—At 400 Beacon Street, Mrs. Eddy's home when she founded The Christian Science Monitor. An exhibit traces her role as Founder and Leader of our movement—preaching, teaching, writing, and commenting on issues still current.

Open May 1 through October 31, 10 to 5 weekdays (including Saturdays), 2 to 5 Sundays; November 1 through April 30, 10 to 4 Saturdays only, 2 to 5 Sundays; closed all holidays except Patriots' Day (third Monday in April), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), and Bunker Hill Day (June 17).

1875-1882 LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS— At 12 Broad Street, where 100 years ago Mrs. Eddy completed her manuscript for Science and Health. It was while living here that Mrs. Eddy initiated many foundational steps in establishing the Christian Science movement. These include the formation of the Christian Scientist Association; the Church of Christ, Scientist; the Massachusetts Metaphysical College. Here also Mrs. Eddy was ordained as Pastor of her church.

Open May 1 through October 31, 10 to 5 weekdays (including Saturdays), 2 to 5 Sundays; November 1 through April 30, 10 to 3 Saturdays only, 2 to 5 Sundays; closed all holidays except Memorial Day and Bunker Hill Day (June 17).

Trained guides are on hand year round at both houses to welcome visitors.
