To pray for the recovery of the sick without understanding the scientific fact revealed in Christian Science that disease is unreal can be a vain exercise. This Science restores to Christianity its vital element of healing. It brings the Christian release from the false belief that God knows or permits evil, and it does this by showing logically and scientifically that God, to be God, must be—and is—all good and has made all in His own perfect image. Teaching that God, divine Mind, has no opposite and is always in control of His creation, Science is today healing disease and sin on the same basis that Christ Jesus healed them.
But the inseparability of Christianity and Christian Science works in another direction. The Founder of Christianity taught his followers a powerful way of life—the life of a Christian. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus taught self-sacrifice, purity, integrity, peaceableness, morality, the justice that is expressed in goodwill toward others—every aspect of Christianity. It can be readily seen that just as Christian Science is essential to Christianity, so is a Christian approach essential to the successful practice of Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy says, "Christian Science Mind-healing can only be gained by working from a purely Christian standpoint." No and Yes, p. 12;
One cannot endeavor to heal scientifically without expressing true Christianity. We need the compassion, patience, and persistence that Jesus taught through parable and example. He said, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." John 13:35; Here is a test of our Christian discipleship.
