Sunday School

The how to of class participation—Part II

From the September 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Inspiration is like a bucket of fireflies. Once you've filled the bucket, just peel off the lid and stand back. Things will take care of themselves. Sunday School teachers who come to class enriched by their deep study and practice of the Lesson-Sermon, together with further study in the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings, find that their inspiration never fluctuates. They've filled their bucket, and the ideas are just bursting to get out. These ideas glow with life as they are lived.

"Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way," Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 454), and prayerful study and practice bring evidence of divine Love's inspiring presence to the Sunday School class. We find Love inspiring us as teachers all week, illumining our consciousness, and designating what needs to be prepared. Then, Love inspires and leads both us and our students during the Sunday School hour so that together we are listening to God's Word, hearing and speaking as He directs. God-directed, healing, enlightening participation that results in a better understanding of Christian Science can be the norm.

Many of the Bible people's lives can be used as beginning points for lively and productive discussions that teach the truths of Christian Science, and the Lesson-Sermon is an excellent source for such accounts. It's impossible to overestimate the power contained in the Lesson-Sermon to meet any Sunday School need.
