Why repentance?

From the September 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How does Christian Science actually bring reform and healing to disturbed or diseased human lives? This is a question the newcomer often asks, but its answer is just as vital to the more seasoned student of this Science.

Many people assume there is a hidden power in the human mind that enables it to put itself right, and that what we need to do is tap this supposed resource. This assumption is so basic to commonly practiced mental therapeutic methods today that without alertness one may sometimes find it gaining a foothold in his own thought. Its apparent reasonableness would keep this easy assumption from being questioned.

But is it actually possible for a human being to think his way to salvation or healing? Or is there more to it? What part, if any, does the human element play in its own salvation?
