Go ahead! Lean.

From the October 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Many people want to lean on God but are afraid, believing they don't know how or aren't worthy. They mistakenly suppose they are outside God's love. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,"Matt. 11:28.promised Christ Jesus. God is infinite, all embracing Love, incapable of excluding any identity from His care. Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Science and Health, p. vii.

If you want to rely on God, be assured you can. Everyone now leaning on God had to have a first time! I wanted to rely on "the sustaining infinite," but I doubted my leaning ability until Christian Science taught me how. I attended a Christian Science Sunday School while growing up, and I loved hearing from a hymn of the "everlasting arms of Love" that "are beneath, around, above." Christian Science Hymnal, No. 53. Then a time of great need forced me to learn that I could lean wholly on God's almighty power, that nothing could be more substantial than infinite Love! Physicians had told my husband, who was not a Scientist at the time, that a disease our little boy suffered from was incurable.

My husband gave me permission to seek help through prayer from a public practitioner of Christian Science. "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding"Prov. 3:5. was the demand on us. Together my husband and I prayed to learn how to trust God more, to understand that material conditions, including disease, are mistaken beliefs about man. At the time this seemed difficult, if not impossible, as the material evidence of disease seemed so real.
