My father's mother turned to Christian Science...

From the May 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

My father's mother turned to Christian Science at a time of family tragedy and physical need. She was healed and became one of the first students of Science in the Wyoming area.

During my early childhood years, we lived far from a branch church, and so we naturally appreciated turning to the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, as our pastor (see Miscellaneous Writings by Mrs. Eddy, pp. 382-383). As a teen-ager, I was wakened one night by my parents' voices downstairs. Mom was in great pain and Dad was trying to comfort her.

We could not call a Christian Science practitioner for help because we had no telephone. I sat down and began to read Science and Health. I don't remember what I read, but suddenly the symptoms of acute suffering became unreal to me. I felt a lovely spiritual peace. Mom was healed instantly, and we all went back to bed. She told me later that some stones had been eliminated from her body. Years later, while thinking about her quick release, I noticed this statement in Science and Health (p. xi): "The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus' time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation."
