Fireworks?

From the July 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

No, it may not be exactly like that.

Prayer probably will not be like a sky full of fireworks
if by that you mean exploding, zinging, loud and thrilling
obviously enormous things.

If you mean impressive displays of equally impressive
sound and light to tingle even the most placid viewer.
No, I wouldn't say it's like that.

But, if you mean light against an otherwise black night,
and if you mean is it possible to experience it
without making a sound yourself,
and if you mean delightful and unexpected color,
vibrancy immeasurable by mere human speculation,
energy full–force rising into atmosphere
so ready for whatever is being offered—

then, yes. Perhaps prayer can be that way.

Yet, what of sound? Does prayer blast forth with
pyrotechnic BOOM?
Will everyone nearby feel jolted
by a public performance?

Not quite.

But oh the sound of total trust! Not heard by mortal ear.
Not advertised across a sky to make a bold/impressive
splash across the heart.

This sound is penetration of a different sort!
Conviction's statement never turns back,
only goes UP, full–blended sound and light,
to fill thought–sky with healing brightness,
quietly alone with Soul.

Yet marvelously freely shared
with all who care to see.
