When I was in eighth grade I was hit by a speeding car while riding my bicycle on a country road. I clearly remember saying, "I'm a Christian Scientist and don't want to go to a hospital. Please take me home."
Despite my request, however, I was taken to the emergency room of a nearby hospital. A doctor notified my parents and told them that in addition to severe lacerations, I had a dislocated shoulder and a fractured pelvis. He said that I would have to be in a body cast for at least six months and that it was possible I would never walk again.
My parents declined all material remedies (including the body cast) and immediately called to ask a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me. My own trust in God's power to heal me through the application of Christian Science was absolute. It never even occurred to me to trust anything but God, nor was there doubt in my mind that I would be fully healed.
