As a young man I made an extensive hiking tour through a mountainous region. In so doing, I had to cover quite a lot of distance from one lodging to the next. One evening I was feeling exhausted, but I wanted to complete my journey by a certain time. The opportunity presented itself to hitch a ride part of the way on a motorcycle. We had an accident, and I was flung from the seat. I was taken to a hospital, where I was diagnosed as having a fractured pelvis.
Having known of Christian Science since I was fourteen, I turned in prayer to God for healing. It became clear to me that man dwells eternally in God's presence and under His guidance, and that I, as His beloved child, cannot truly be injured. Through this prayer all pain disappeared, and I felt perfectly whole. I had a small Bible and a Pocket Edition of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy with me. Studying these books helped me better understand my relationship to God. I also had the Christian Science Quarterly, and I studied the current Bible Lesson.
The doctor told me I would have to lie still for at least six weeks so that the fracture in the pelvis could heal, but after two weeks the doctor finally gave in to my insistence and allowed me to try to stand up, He said, "You'll lie down again right away," but I was fine and was able to move about freely. Three months later I was performing heavy work in a quarry without any difficulties whatsoever, which confirmed for me the complete healing.
